INTRODUCTION

The Market Index is a single descriptive statistic designed as a performance benchmark expressed by the movements of underlying group of stock prices in the market. The goal of an index in any stock market is portraying the aggregate price changes of stocks which make up the index and, as a result, measures the volatility of the market as well as the price direction whether these directions are up, down or constant.

The Market Index of the Doha Securities Market (DSM) is identified as the “DSM 20 Index” and represents 20 listed companies.

METHODOLOGY USED FOR CALCULATING DSM 20 INDEX

The DSM 20 Index is a market capitalization-weighted index which is the most applicable method utilized in almost all stock markets.

DSM 20 Index includes 20 listed companies from the four (4) different sectors in the market.

The sectors in the market are: Banking & financial, Insurance, Industrial and Services.

THE FORMULA USED IN COMPUTING DSM 20 INDEX

DSM 20 Index in A day =

Market Capitalization of all companies entered into the sample index on (*A) day

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X 1,000

Adjusted Base Value on (A) day

Market Value = Closing price for a company on (A) day X Number of shares available for trading on (A) day.

Whereas:

Market value of the sample index on a trading day =

The number of traded shares (Free Float Shares) which represents a sample Index of each company from all 20 companies multiplied by closing prices on that trading day.

Market Value of the sample index on Base day =

The number of traded days (Free Float Shares) which represents a sample Index of each company from all 20 companies multiplied by closing prices on that base day

Example for illustration:

The last adjustment made on the DSM 20 Index occurred on March 19, 2007 when Al Ahli Bank changed its capital. Here the index will be calculated as follows: (once the 20 companies included in the index on September 01, 2007 will be approved)
